Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a self-represented person/litigant?

A self-represented person (or "self-rep") is someone who handles their own legal matter without hiring a lawyer for full representation. This means they are responsible for preparing their case, filing documents, and presenting their arguments in court or before a tribunal. Self-reps are common in Small Claims Court, administrative tribunals, family law matters, and other legal disputes where individuals choose to navigate the system independently.

While self-representation can save on legal fees, the legal process can be complex. Many self-reps seek unbundled legal services, which allow them to get specific legal assistance—such as document drafting, case strategy, or legal research—without hiring a lawyer for full representation. This approach provides professional legal support while keeping costs predictable and manageable.

More information on the principles of being a self-rep, according to the Canadian Judicial Council, can be found here.

  • What are ‘unbundled’ legal services?

Unbundled legal services, also known as limited scope representation or discrete task representation, involve hiring a lawyer to handle specific tasks or aspects of a legal matter, rather than representing a client for the entire case. This approach allows clients to manage legal costs within budget by only paying for the services they need, while still receiving professional assistance. This is especially beneficial to self-represented persons/litigants.

In the context of legal fees in BC, unbundled legal services might mean that instead of hiring a lawyer for the entire duration of a case, a client and lawyer agree to work together on certain tasks, such as document preparation, legal research, or court appearances. The lawyer provides assistance for these specific tasks, and the client handles other aspects of their case on their own. This arrangement can make legal services more accessible and affordable for individuals who may not be able to afford full representation.

  • How much do your services cost?

Legal fees can vary based on the complexity of the case and the services required. During our initial consultation, we can discuss your situation, and aim to provide an outline of the anticipated costs and any potential additional expenses.

We provide both hourly and fixed fee rates. As of January 2025, Sarah Abbott’s hourly rate is $295, plus taxes, fees and disbursements (subject to change without notice).
